According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-third of U.S. adults are obese, and as of 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were approximately $147 billion. Millions of Americans struggle to keep themselves in shape and find solutions that will work to stay in shape over a long period of time. Most weight loss efforts include ineffective diets or methods whose results last only temporarily.

America is not obese because of a lack of trying to get in shape, as the diet industry brings in about $35 billion in revenue each year from diet drugs, weight-loss surgeries, and dieting books in the US alone according to CBS News. The number of people on diets is around 108 million, and of those who are dieting, each person typically makes four to five attempts per year. It is clear that we are battling obesity, but currently losing that battle.

One effort that is gaining momentum in the battle against obesity is hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy is a treatment that is used to treat many things including obesity, and may be one of the more effective methods according to research. Kerrilee Pietroski M. Ed.,C.H. is a certified hypnotherapist and owner of Catalyst Hypnosis Center. I interviewed Kerrilee about hypnotherapy, how it can assist with weight loss, Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis, and more.

What is Hypnosis

According to Catalyst Hypnosis Center, Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness characterized by extreme relaxation, heightened imagination, and increased concentration and suggestibility. In this state, you are awake but you are relaxed to the point that you tune out most of the stimuli around you. You focus intently on the subject at hand, to the near exclusion of any other thought. While hypnotized, the critical factor of the conscious mind is bypassed, enabling the subconscious mind to more readily receive and accept new suggestions, beliefs and ideas.

Michael Luchies: In regards to weight loss, is hypnotherapy similar to a diet?

Kerrilee Pietroski: Hypnotherapy for weight loss is very different than going on a diet. Diets restrict certain foods and dictates how you should eat. If you chose to utilize a diet, hypnosis can help you follow your diet, making the changes easier and increasing your motivation for eating healthier food. The suggestions will be based on the changes the individual wants to make in order to reach their weight loss goals.

ML: You specialize in Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis, what is it and how does it work?

KP: Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis is an all-encompassing program that utilizes cognitive behavioral training, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and hypnosis. While in hypnosis, the client is lead through a “virtual surgical procedure” that convinces their subconscious mind that they have had gastric lap band surgery – thereby believing that their stomach is smaller and they become fuller off of smaller portions of food. In addition to the virtual “insertion” of a gastric lap band, the program involves learning new eating habits, understanding how to make better food choices (while not leaving the client feeling deprived) and helping them learn how to live the rest of their life with a healthier relationship with food.
